Whole Food, Plant-Based Recipe Tofu Marinated Hot Dogs

Recipe courtesy of Karen Stern, PPMNY Westchester Organizer

Hot dogs anyone? Who said a hot dog has to be made with meat. This tofu based dog is so tasty and filled with protein and fiber. Enjoy!

Instructions

1. Cut tofu lengthwise into the desired number of links. Optionally, shave down the corners of each link using a sharp knife, to get a rounded shape.
2. On the stove, heat a large, nonstick skillet and set on low-medium heat. (Optional: Spray regular skillet very lightly with olive oil.) Place the tofu strips onto the skillet and heat on each of its four sides until they are all a very light golden brown. This may take about 5 minutes on each side.
3. Stir soy sauce/tamari, maple syrup, vinegar, liquid smoke, garlic, paprika, onion powder, and pepper together in a small dish. Whisk well.
4. Place tofu links into marinade and gently toss to coat. Allow to marinate at least 1 hour at room temperature, or up to 24 hours in the refrigerator (the longer, the better), tossing periodically to recoat with marinade.
5. Pan-seared option: Use a nonstick skillet — or lightly spray a regular skillet with olive oil — and place over medium heat. Once hot, arrange links in the skillet in a single layer, working in batches if they don’t all fit. Cook about 3 minutes per side if you cut your links square, or just roll them every three minutes or so if they’re round, until nicely browned all over. Grilled Option: Place marinated tofu strips on the grill and cook them on each side for a few minutes.
6. Stuff links into whole wheat buns and top with your condiment(s) of choice.
